The old fishing village of Conil de la Frontera is the only one of the so-called “white villages” of Andalusia, that is located directly on the coast. The lack of giant hotel complexes and giant hotels strikes the eye immediately. The city has been largely spared by the typical mass tourism “à la Costa del Sol” and has been able to conserve it’s andalusian flair.

Conil lives nowadays mainly by national and international tourism, even if the other major source of income, fishing, has lost hardly any significance. The town owes its appeal especially to the urban structure with small, winding streets and “Plazas” escalate in the city centre, as well as its white sandy beaches and picturesque bays in the coastal area. In the old town there are numerous shops, bars and restaurants which bear witness to the vitality of Andalusian mentality.

In the summer months the “population” of 22,000 inhabitants grows to over 80,000 due to the influx of tourists. However, the streets and beaches are not overcrowded. Calm returns then gradually with the end of the high season from mid-September and the normal everyday life continues. In general May/June and September/October are the perfect months, to make holidays in Conil: mild climate with daytime temperatures around 30 ° C, sunny weather and almost empty beaches. Conil de la Frontera and its neighbouring towns offer unlimited possibilities for leisure activities to make holidays more attractive. Thus, the region offers not only extensive sand beaches and winding creeks, but also charming nature with unique pine and eucalyptus forests in the outback.

Due to its geographical location and its mild climate, the "Costa de la Luz" is ideal for water sports.

There are a large number of surf schools along the entire coast section of "Roche" up to "Tarifa". From day over week courses to so-called summer camps there is a great offer.

Diving

The waters of the "Costa de la Luz" are ideal for diving. The clean and clear water with abundant sea flora and fauna in front of the beaches offer excellent conditions with visibility of up to 30 meters. While it is possible for experienced divers to dive with appropriate equipment at your own, for beginners it is essential to complete a corresponding dive course. Most schools in Conil offer a 2-day course to obtain the "open water diver - certificate".

Horseback riding

Unless excursions on horseback, along the beach or through the nearby pine and eucalyptus forests around Roche, are a popular pastime and welcome change during the holiday. Several riding stables and riding schools offer you the possibility to make excursions on horseback with or without a guide:

Bicycle tours

Bicycles, in particular mountain bikes, are a popular means of transport in Roche and its surroundings due to the short distances. Also you can undertake fantastic tours in the surrounding area of Roche or Conil or directly on the beach.

Nightlife info

Conil offers entertainment and fun for every ages and taste. The actual nightlife often will not start before 23:00 in the evening and usually begins with the dinner in a typical tapas bar or in one of the innumerable fish restaurants which are located mainly in the old town or along the beach promenade.

Usually nightlife continues in one of the many bars, some of them under the open sky. The most famous is "La Luna" in the centre of the city. A formerly typical Andalusian courtyard which offers commercial house music in a relaxed atmosphere.

For those who like it stylish, can settle in the "Jacaranda", where Flamenco concerts are presented. It is not for nothing that the area around Conil is regarded as birthplace of flamenco and its most important representative, "El Camarón de la Isla", as an icon of a new Flamenco style.

Who still has not enough after the official "curfew" at 4:00 in the morning, can finish the night in one of the discotheques. We recommend the "Íkaro" downtown or the nearby "Océano" and "Ohjú", located on the road towards Caños de Meca.

Culture and history info

Conil de la Frontera was founded at the time of the Phoenicians, and was subject to the influences of different cultures in the course of its history. In particular, the rule of the Moors from the year 711 has left its mark.

With the re-conquest by the Christians in the context of the 'reconquista', the city received its current name. This bears witness to the addition of "de la Frontera" (engl.: at the border) the fact that Conil formed the border with the Kingdom of the Moors like other cities such as "Chiclana", "Jerez" and "Arcos".

There is no shortage of Arabic Mudéjar architecture in Conil. Above all the "Torre de Guzmán", as well as the "Baluarte".
