Roche

Roche

Things to do - general
The village of Roche is a border district of Conil de la Frontera and is located in the middle of a landscaped park with abundant vegetation.

Roche is well-known among tourists particularly by its famous residential area which consists mainly of magnificent villas and posh single-family homes with beautiful terraces, coquettish gardens and private swimming pools as well as by its unique bays (“calas”).

Mass tourism is a foreign word in Roche even if the “calas” on a hot and windy summerday fill up to the brim.

Due to the short distances, Conil is the most popular destination for tourists who are on holidays in Roche.

Sports & nature

Conil de la Frontera and its neighbouring towns such as Roche offer unlimited possibilities for leisure activities to make holidays more attractive. Thus, the region offers not only extensive sandy beaches and winding creeks, but also charming nature with unique pine and eucalyptus forests in the outback.

Here are a few suggestions on how enterprising people can actively shape their free time:

Surfing and kite surfing

Due to its geographical location and its mild climate, the "Costa de la Luz" is ideal for water sports.

There are a large number of surf schools along the entire coast section of "Roche" up to "Tarifa". From day over week courses to so-called summer camps there is a great offer.

Here are some interesting links to surf schools:

Diving

The waters of the "Costa de la Luz" are ideal for diving. The clean and clear water with abundant sea flora and fauna in front of the beaches offer excellent conditions with visibility of up to 30 meters.
While it is possible for experienced divers to dive with appropriate equipment at your own, for beginners it is essential to complete a corresponding dive course. Most schools in Conil offer a 2-day course to obtain the "open water diver - certificate".

Diving schools in Conil which offer such courses or trips are here:

Horseback riding

Unless excursions on horseback, along the beach or through the nearby pine and eucalyptus forests around Roche, are a popular pastime and welcome change during the holiday.

Nightlife

Athough there some small bars and restaurants in the residential area of Roche, it is advisible to enjoy nightlife in Conil.

Conil offers entertainment and fun for every ages and taste.
The actual nightlife often will not start before 23:00 in the evening and usually begins with the dinner in a typical tapas bar or in one of the innumerable fish restaurants which are located mainly in the old town or along the beach promenade.

Usually nightlife continues in one of the many bars, some of them under the open sky. The most famous is "La Luna" in the centre of the city. A formerly typical Andalusian courtyard which offers commercial house music in a relaxed atmosphere.

For those who like it stylish, can settle in the "Jacaranda", where Flamenco concerts are presented. It is not for nothing that the area around Conil is regarded as birthplace of flamenco and its most important representative, "El Camarón de la Isla", as an icon of a new Flamenco style.

Who still has not enough after the official "curfew" at 4:00 in the morning, can finish the night in one of the discotheques. We recommend the "Íkaro" downtown or the nearby "Océano" and "Ohjú", located on the road towards Caños de Meca.

Culture and History

Conil de la Frontera was founded at the time of the Phoenicians, and was subject to the influences of different cultures in the course of its history. In particular, the rule of the Moors from the year 711 has left its mark.

With the re-conquest by the Christians in the context of the 'reconquista', the city received its current name. This bears witness to the addition of "de la Frontera" (engl.: at the border) the fact that Conil formed the border with the Kingdom of the Moors like other cities such as "Chiclana", "Jerez" and "Arcos".

There is no shortage of Arabic Mudéjar architecture in Conil. Above all the "Torre de Guzmán", as well as the "Baluarte".

If you are interested to get to know the cultural and historical sites of Conil, then you should participate in a tour organised by the local tourist office. These trips are offered once a week during the summer months with guide in English for currently 3 euro per person.

The flea markets for arts and crafts represent another form of cultural life. The most famous is the "marcadillo de artesanía", which takes place every day in the summer months along the beach promenade.
