Things to do - general

Bolonia is one of the last unspoilt beaches at the Costa de la Luz where the environment has been conserved with sensitivness.

Bolonia counts on 120 inhabitants and is especially popular among nature lovers because of its pristine landscape of dunes and abundant vegetation in the interior. The location is famous by its soft tourism where large vacation resorts are out of place. Nevertheless the leisure offer is diverse.

We recommend, in addition to explorations in the surrounding area and water sport activities, visiting the busier tourist locations of Tarifa and Zahara de los Atunes.

As Bolonia is a small village you should enjoy nightlife in the neighbouring places such as Zahara de los Atunes.

Zahara offers a diverse range of entertainment for everey taste and ages. But bear in mind that even Zahara is just a little town on the Costa de la Luz, so that nightlife is more relaxed. However, most of the establishments offer top quality.

For those who prefer it quiet should visit El Sur or El Refugio, where you can have a cultivated conservation over a glass of wine in a relaxed atmosphere.

Very popular are the typical chillout lounges along the beach, such as the Iguana or the famous Catedral Beach which offer in addition to stylish music and cool ambience a fascinating view of the beach scene and the ocean.

Moreover, you can find some of the so called "chiringuitos". Typical spanish beach bars which offer tapas, drinks and music before the sunset.

Culture and History

The most important sight in Bolonia are the ruins of Baelo Claudia, built under Roman rule at the end of 2nd century B.C.

Other sights of cultural interest you can find in the nearby Tarifa.

Here, the visit of the castle Guzmán el Bueno is recommended. A fortress built in arabic Múdejar style which should protect the inhabitants from assaults by their adversaries. From one of the watchtowers you can enjoy the incredible views on the Strait of Gibraltar and the nearby Moroccan coast.

Around the oldtown of Tarifa there are the very well preserved fortress walls with observation platforms which offer awesome views as well.

Other historic sites are the Castillo de Santa Catalina and the protection towers around the historic center.

In addition, Tarifa has a wide range of cultural life. We highly recommend the visit of the flea markets, known as "mercadillos" and the typical local concerts in many bars and "chiringuitos".
